Born in Mexico City in 1975, Gabriela Santos Ramos is a visual artist and educator specializing in Printmaker (xylography). She studied Visual Arts at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and has exhibited in more than 38 shows across Mexico and the United States. Her work includes community murals with the Neza Arte Nel collective and interactive printmaking projects with Caldo de Cultivo Urbano.
Her artistic practice has been featured at the UC Santa Cruz Center for Justice, Tolerance and Community and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco. She has been selected multiple times by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) to participate in binational artist conferences, cultural exchanges, and collaborative programs.
Gabriela is a member of the international traveling exhibition Corazón Migrante, which has toured consulates and institutions in the U.S., Mexico, and abroad. She was recognized as 2023–2024 Artist of the Year by the Tulare County Arts Consortium and Tulare County S.L.P. Nominee for C.A.C. Arts Award. Currently forms part of the Art Folk Collective.
In addition to her artistic work, Gabriela serves as Creative Director of the Academia Juvenil de Arte y Cultura (AJAC) and collaborates with O.L.A. Raza and the Comisión Honorífica Mexicana Americana (CHMA), supporting community projects that celebrate and preserve Mexican cultural traditions.
My art has been produced in series, drawing on everyday themes from personal experiences—situations I observe in others and which I also take on as my own, as a form of solidarity.. I love to experiment with different mediums and techniques to create pieces that are unique and expressive.
The Youth Academy of Art and Culture (AJAC) is a space created with the ideal of offering art and craft workshops for all ages, with funding from O.L.A. Raza, Inc., a non-profit organization. These workshops are offered organically. Through my volunteer work, I enjoy sharing this space with others who want to learn and help preserve our culture and traditions.
For me, it's important to showcase the woodcut technique, as it's not always recognized. I take advantage of opportunities like art fairs or cultural events where I explain the basics of wood engraving and give a printing demonstration, or even a basic workshop on creating and printing a small print.
