Community Work

Experience

In the summer of 2008, a pilot program began in which I and two invited Mexican artists led a variety of workshops for children between the ages of 11 and 14. It culminated in a collaborative mural project led by local artist Victor Cervantes, where all participants worked together.

Process

Due to a lack of funding to continue with more workshops, AJAC reinvented itself and, together with O.L.A. Raza, began working in conjunction with the Mexican-American Honor Commission (CHMA). This marked the beginning of my involvement with these two organizations in the allegorical and creative aspects of four annual events.

5 de Mayo

Creating and painting decorations

I work with volunteers to create decorations for our float in the annual Cinco de Mayo parade, representing O.L.A. Raza. We try to incorporate Mexican art and crafts, along with phrases that encourage the community to stay united and value our culture.

commemorating the end of Spanish colonial rule. Sometimes, the event includes a rebozo fashion show, and I'm also responsible for the ambiance and decorations for the stage at the Community Center (CHMA). I also collaborate on the installation of artwork by Mexican artists and artisans from the AJAC collection.

    2 de Noviembre

Día de Muertos is an important date for our Mexican people.

It is a syncretism of pre-columbian and Catholic traditions. We commemorate those who passed but remain present in our hearts. We honor them with an altar, an Aztec blessing, and folkloric dances.  People enjoy tamales, atole, and traditional bread while sharing  their beloved ones' stories.
